Choosing the Right Metal Detector

Many people love searching for hidden treasure. With a metal detector, you can unearth all sorts of things. You never know what you might find buried deep in the dirt or sand. Hobbyist treasure seekers of all ages can enjoy exploring the world around them with a detector. If you've never used one before, you might be unsure of how to shop for one of these devices. Keep reading to learn more about choosing the best detector for your needs.

First, you'll want to determine your budget. Detectors are available for as little as $100 or as much as $1,000. If you're just going to be treasure hunting on weekends or every now and then, you don't need to break the bank to get a good detector. When it comes to features, the more expensive detectors can often search deeper and are more sensitive than the less expensive ones. Another thing that may affect the price is whether or not the detector is all terrain.

An all terrain detector is one that lets you search on any type of land and even water. This means you can actually look in water for lost treasures. This feature is definitely one you'll want if you use the detector at the beach. One example of a detector that's reasonable in price yet can search in the water is the Viper Trident Underwater model. This detector costs around $399 and has the capability to search in all types of terrain. If you want to search for treasure in a deep body of water, you'll want something like the Aurora Micro Pulse Underwater Detector. This model attaches to the wrist like a watch, and is perfect for bodies of water that are too deep for a full size detector.

Along with a good metal detector, you might also need some accessories. Examples of accessories are hip mount assemblies, carrying bags, and books. One great book on the subject of prospecting with a detector is You Can Find Gold by Charles Garrett and Roy Lagal. You might also want to check out The Urban Treasure Hunter: A Practical Handbook for Beginners by Michael Chaplan. There are different guidebooks for different types of terrain as well, such as The Beach Hunter's Guide that teaches you how to search in sand and surf. With the right detecting equipment and a little guidance, you're likely to be unearthing great treasures in no time!
